While 2014 brought us some incredible songs that were winners with listeners on the charts, it also brought us some songs that were destined for greatness, but then fell a bit short. Here are 7 of our favorite songs here at #CMChat that should’ve been hits in 2014, but for one reason or another, just weren’t all that big.
1. Love & Theft – Night That You’ll Never Forget
With an undeniably catchy hook, Love & Theft’s ode to a great night was one of our favorite tracks and videos of 2014. The video featured cameos from many of #CMChat’s favorite artists, including Jana Kramer, Maggie Rose, Parmalee, Joel Crouse, Michael Ray, JT Hodges, DeeJay Silver and more. Additionally, the track was just enough “to the left, to the left, to the right” to standout in a sea of party songs, but unfortunately, it sunk in said sea. It’s still a song that we’ll never forger.
2. Trisha Yearwood ft. Kelly Clarkson – PrizeFighter
The odds were against Trisha Yearwood when she released “PrizeFighter” to radio, but she came out swinging any way. With her gloves on, she enlisted Kelly Clarkson’s powerful vocals to provide her backup and the pair delivered one of the best vocal performances of the year. When it came to the charts, however, the track was completely knocked out.
3. Chuck Wicks – Us Again
While Chuck Wicks may have had some success with his debut single “Stealing Cinderella,” he’s yet to have a huge followup and “Us Again” seemed like the perfect track to finally solidify his place amongst country’s top men. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and we have to wonder if a bigger name on a bigger label released the track, would it have been a huge hit?
4. Brothers Osborne – Rum
Arguably one of the most exciting new acts in country music, Brothers Osborne released a summery ode to alcohol that seemed poised for greatness. With its fun breeziness, it would’ve been a welcome change on country radio, but instead, the track surprisingly stalled on the charts. While it may not have been the #1 that the brothers hoped for, we expected big things from these boys in 2015.
5. Kelleigh Bannen – Famous
“Famous” was one of the best kiss-off anthems to hit music in quite some time, but unfortunately, it got lost in the shuffle. With its punchy melody and clever lyrics, it should’ve been enough to make Kelleigh Bannen famous, but it’s lack of success could probably be attributed to country radio’s current and obvious aversion to female singers.
6. Kip Moore – Dirt Road
With hits like “Young Love” and “Hey Pretty Girl” under his belt, it’d be safe to assume that anything Kip Moore would touch would turn to gold. When he released the highly-anticipated track “Dirt Road,” his patented growl was on full display as he paired it with meaningful wonderment about what heaven would be like. Despite the critical acclaim and fan love for the song, it stalled out on the tracks. Unfortunately, it looks like heaven does not have a “Dirt Road.”
7. David Nail – Kiss You Tonight
As the follow up to the #1 single, “Whatever She’s Got,” the second single from David Nail’s I’m A Fire stalled on radio for no good reason. Although it may not have been as endlessly earwormy as “Whatever,” it was still a punchy country track that had all the makings of a surefire hit.
